About Garage Door Gears
A new garage door gear can be used to either replace an existing worn gear, or on a new bespoke garage door. We stock a number of different types of mechanism to cater for different needs and our gears can lift up to a maximum of 227kgs (500 lbs). Below we'll look to answer some of the most common questions you may have before selecting the right gear for the job.
What is the difference between canopy and retractable door gears?
Canopy door gear will only lift up to 45kgs, on a door size no more than 9ft wide, however, as the spring will be located across the top of the door you will retain the full width of your door for parking you car inside the garage. The door will stick out like a canopy when fully open. With a retractable door gear, the springs will be located down either side, and they are capable of lifting much heavier doors, such as those made from timber. The door will retract fully when open, and can be more easily operated with an electric opener.
How do I weigh my door?
The easiest way to weigh the door - assuming there is no weight information on the door itself - is to carefully lower the door onto two sets of household scales; one under each corner of the door. This will give you an accurate weight.
Can I not install the heaviest gear to be on the safe side?
If the gear is too strong for the door, it will make the door impossible to close, or the door may fly open like a catapult which can be dangerous.
